June Updates, News & Events

New Pedestrian Lights:

The construction happening today and yesterday on the Danforth is the installation of new footings in preparation for the new lights that are finally ready!!!!  I didn't get advance notice that this work was happening so I couldn't let you know sooner.  This has been a very long process but our City reps are hoping that the new lights will be installed by June 15.  The old black wrought iron lights will be removed next week.  The new lights are modern in design, high efficiency and with a good light spill onto the sidewalk providing greatly improved lighting in the evenings.

Credit Card Incidents:

A couple of our businesses have been the victims of credit card scams in the past few days.  Our community police officers would like to remind all of you to always insert the customer's credit card into the machine yourself and if the customer isn't able to punch in the correct access code ask if they have another method of payment.

The 9th Annual Thrill of the Grill - Sat. June 16th:
We're so excited about this year's Thrill event.  We have 10 of our restaurant/food shops participating and offering amazing food; plus grilled corn, Select Wines, SteamWhistle Beer, Eska water, and Second Cup's summer iced coffee and Italian sodas.  Everything is covered with the one $20 ticket.  Our BIA Loblaws, Danforth Music Hall, Bob + Paige Salon, iPro Realty all will have great contributions and activations at the event.  The Clay Room is designing and creating a special trophy for one of the competitions.  There will be activities for kids, live music, Withrow Farmer's Market and a lot of fun. Full details at www.DanforthThrilloftheGrill.com

The event runs from noon to 4pm and we host 2,000 guests.  As a BIA Member we invite you to take advantage of this event to promote your business - you can set up on the sidewalk in front of your business on Danforth (no charge, we've covered the permit fees), you can donate to the Mystery Bags - we do 250 bags and sell the bags for $10 each with the proceeds going to Kidney Cancer Research at Sunnybrook's Odette Cancer Centre.  Each bag usually has a value of $150+.  You can donate product, gift certificates, vouchers etc. and you can donate for all 250 bags or for the number of bags that works best for you.  We need your contributions by June 14th.  Please email me to let me know if you wish to participate or if you have any questions.

Tickets are on sale through our Thrill website or you can purchase actual tickets at our BIA's iPro Realty office, 276 Danforth Avenue.  They're open 7 days a week and the times are listed on our Thrill website.

Volunteers: we always need wonderful people to donate their time to helping us on the day of the event.  We also welcome high school students who need to fulfill their community volunteer hours.   If you wish to volunteer or have people who wish to volunteer please email me.

Chester Subway Station Construction Meeting:

The Chester Station Second Exit/Easier Access Open House is next Tuesday. Please feel free to drop by any time between 7pm and 9pm to learn about the upcoming construction and speak with members of the project team.
