September Things 'n News

Happy September All,

I hope that everyone had a good long weekend and if you have kids going back to school today  I hope the morning wasn't too crazy!

A few items to start off this week:

1. Danforth Strong t-shirts are still for sale with proceeds going to the Toronto Fund.  Shirts are being sold at Small WondersSecond Cup and Kemi.

2. New Street Lights - we did a walk through last week in the evening and the lights that are still not working are a result of a hydro problem.  Hydro has been notified and is working on this.

3. Special Offer to BIA Members - below is a special offer from one of our BIA members, Hero's Guide.  Full details are listed below.  The Hero's Guide office is located on the top floor of 253 Danforth Avenue.

4. Request for volunteers - below is a request from the Danforth Church for volunteers and assistance with their Wednesday Suppers.  Full details are also listed below for any one interested in helping out.

Danforth Church Wednesday Suppers
For decades Danforth Church along with a team of community based volunteers has been running a weekly community meal for those in need which we call the Wednesday Suppers.  We provide supportive drop-in time and friendly table service in our Cafe downstairs for about 55 people. This year the Suppers will run from September 12 to the second last week in June on Wednesdays at 6pm, with doors opening around 4:30 in the afternoon.

We are always looking for volunteers who are interested in cooking a main course or a simple dessert for about 55 people, either once or twice a year, or on a rotational basis every few weeks.  We have a regular kitchen team of volunteers that preps salad and sides, most of whom are from the larger community outside of the church and can work with anyone who is interested.  There is a warm community kitchen kind of atmosphere.

If anyone in the BIA might be interested or knows someone who might be, would you pass this on or let me know?  We have several longstanding volunteers, but need to replenish our ranks for the coming season.

It’s also possible that one or more Danforth restaurants might offer to provide the main course for one or two occasions in the year.  We always announce and thank whoever has cooked the meal at the Suppers each week, so it creates a great deal of goodwill and appreciation for whoever contributes in some way.  We happily accept donations, but are also able to reimburse cooks for ingredients purchased based on receipts.
